Gelas Bas Armagnac Single Cask Oloroso finish (Sherry) matured 12 years
It is not usual to present a strong Armagnac with 54% vol. but I have decided to follow an authentic approach of great Armagnac according to the balance of all flavours. Since 1896 Emilio Lustau has been proud to offer a wide range of the best quality Sherries. The range comprises more than forty wines originating from the three towns which make up the Sherry Triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
Appearance : Intense topaz amber with gold highlights, bright and limpid.
Nose : Elegant with a multitude of spices, notes of pepper and nuts.
Mouth : the attack is clean, the tannins very rich with beeswax notes and tobacco. The finish is very rich on the palate on coffee and cocoa.
Empty glass : Dry fruits and tobacco.
Philippe Gelas description of his double maturation Armagnacs and tasting notes on Armagnacs De Bortoli Cask Finish.
"I began double cask ageing Armagnacs approximately 10 Years ago with winemaker friends in the south west of France ( Aquitaine ) : In Jurançon, Domaine Nigri in Pacherenc, Château Montus . My approach was purely empirical keeping with the framework of the Appellation d’ Origine Controllée AOC Armagnac in using the proper oak type peduncled and sessile. I did not want to denature the Armagnac but rather to bonify it, watching carefully the residual sugar. After only a few months the aromatic contribution of these casks was strong, and minimised the exchanges with the wood itself. So as to keep their personality there was no blending, and they are at their natural cask strength. Always one Single Cask and no cold filtration. Improbable trials are eliminated. Pursuing on that I created a range of the better known sweet wines (Château Coutet 1er cru classé de sauternes) or fortified wines ( Emilio Lustau Sherry, Porto Barros, Marsala Pellegrino). In 2016 we fulfilled a special order from our swiss importer for a Single Cask Armagnac aged in a barrel of Amigne vinified as a sweet wine and then for the House of De Bortoli in Australia through two exceptional quality wines".
